Fashion trends and really cool styles drive many of us back to the store to buy clothes that look great and bring us compliments. But who would have thought that fashion starts with – math! Sure there are numbers for sizes and prices, but as Jhane Barnes described it in the Ohio Math Work video, math plays a part in fabric design, too.

Stop by the pages listed below, and try out the activities that incorporate math in textile and fabric design.

  • Fractals are both beautiful designs and pictures, and mathematics. Go to Fractals in Fabrics to learn more, and to send your favorite fractal designs to the OMW Fractal Favorites Gallery!
  • In the Ohio Math Work lessons, Weaving With Math provides some of the greatest challenges for students in grades 7 through 9. You'll find help on the web, at the links provided in this area.
  • Design your own carpet samples, and place them in a design, with "eTile," software you'll find in Carpet: Math Underfoot. Dana Cartwright of Designer Software LLC has written this neat little program in which you can design the tile, multiply it, and rotate to achieve the floor pattern you want. Then, send us your page design and we'll post it on the Ohio Math Works Carpet Design Collection.
  • Teachers can find an addition lesson for this unit that will challenge your student's math expertise. Check out Color Gradation.
  • Jhane Barnes, of Jhane Barnes Inc. , is the Ohio Math Works "Fashion" partner. Our thanks also go to her mathematicians, Bill Jones and Dana Cartwright of Designer Software LLC for their assistance with the videos, lessons and web site.
