Sports Pages:   1   2   3   4

Welcome to the world of newspaper advertising! As you heard in the Ohio Math Works video "Newspaper/Sports: Digital Deadlines" a newspaper is a business. And businesses, like the rest of us, need to make money in order to stay alive. Advertising is a major source of the money used to run a newspaper, pay for the staff, the building and other things needed to run the business.

To get a feel for newspaper layouts and how much space advertising can take on a page, go to the four sports pages we've designed. You can do as many pages as you like. Are you up to the challenge to work all four? Once you've reviewed a page, answer the questions at the bottom of each. Will this newspaper make enough money to survive? What do you think?

For all of these pages, each ad is priced at $91.00 a column inch. A "column inch" is the area of space that an ad will use in the newpaper. Newspaper pages are usually between five and seven columns wide. The "inch" is the length of the ad.

Remember: area is found by multiplying length times width.
