The history of the Dayton Daily News and Cox Newspapers goes back many years. The founder of Cox Newspapers, Gov. James M. Cox, was in his late 20s when he acquired the Dayton Daily News in 1898. Governor Cox was a man of many talents and in every endeavor believed that "the public interest must always be paramount" .

Before he acquired the Dayton Daily News, he had spent three years as a teacher, been private secretary to an Ohio congressman, and worked at several newspapers, learning the business by working in a variety of positions. In 1912 he was elected Governor of Ohio, and served three two-year terms between 1912 and 1920. The high point of his political career came when he won the Democratic nomination for President in 1920.

Despite his popularity and success in politics, Governor Cox returned to his first love, the newspaper business. Throughout the years, he acquired newspapers in other cities across the United States, expanding his reach to include radio stations.

Since the death of Governor Cox in the 1950s, the Cox "family" has expanded and grown to include Cox Broadcasting, Cox Communications (which includes digital TV, digital telephone and cable) and a variety of other nationwide companies.
