July 2001 Question:  Local meteorologists have been tracking weather patterns in the area for several weeks. They have organized the data in a chart.

             Daily High Temperatures

Day 1 94
Day 2 97
Day 3 92
Day 4 95
Day 5 90
Day 6 93
Day 7 88
Day 8 91
Day 9 86
Day 10 89
Day 11 84
Day 12 87
Day 13
Day 14

Based on this data, what would you predict for the high temperatures on days 13 and 14? Explain your answer.

Answer:
On Day 13, the temperature would be 82 degrees. On Day 14, the temperature would be 85 degrees. The pattern on the chart is add three, subtract five. In other words, Day 2 is three degrees greater than Day 1. Day 3, though, is five degrees less than the previous day. This pattern continues through the end of the chart.
